MARCELO H. DEL PILAR fashioned out a 2-0 victory over Poveda to capture the ladies title in the high school division event as Arellano retained the boys’ crown by repulsing Ateneo at the close of the JVC Inter-scholastic Badminton Championships yesterday.
Jackielyn Cudia outsteadied Carla Lizardo in the deciding set of the opening singles, pulling off a thrilling 11-9, 10-13, 11-8, victory before the tandem of Jaevena Susbilla and Malou Gaspar clinched the tie for the Malolos, Bulacan-based shuttlers with a big 15-3, 15-6 romp over Fatima dela Cruz and Patricia Tolentino in the doubles before a big Wednesday crowd at the Glorietta.
It was a sweet revenge win for the MHDP squad, which lost to the same squad in the finals of the JVC badminton invitationals early this year.
Arellano, on the other hand, fought back from a first singles loss to win the doubles and the other singles to turn back Ateneo, 2-1, and win rule the boys side.
Doubles partner JP Babad and Anjo Bautista defeated Nicco Supangco and James Roman, 15-9, 17-16, while Andrei Babad prevailed over Rafael Sanchez ,15-9, 15-7, to complete Arellano’s comeback from Ian Bautista’s 2-15, 1-15 loss to Toby Gabi in the first singles match.
Marcelo H. Del Pilar and Arellano thus took home R20,000 each plus medals, JVC items and gift packs from Gosen, L Time Studio, Rudy Project, Planet Sports, Bacchus Energy Drink, Alaska, Snickers, Lactacyd and Sunbolt. Poveda and Ateneo settled for R12,000 prizes, medals and gift items.

Poveda, MHDP dispute junior crown in JVC tilt

POVEDA LEANED on its singles players to repulse a stubborn La Salle-Antipolo side, 2-1, and arranged a championship showdown with in-form Marcelo H. Del Pilar (MHDP) team in the girls’ side of the junior division of the JVC Inter-scholastic Badminton Championships at the Glorietta yesterday.
Samantha Huang dropped just one point in her crucial match with Dionne Ramos, 11-0, 11-1, to clinch the tie for the defending champions, who had to go through the wringer after their doubles team of Fatima dela Cruz and Patricia Tolentino dropped an 11-15, 11-15 setback to Rochelle Andres and Bernice Arsenio.
Earlier, Carla Lizardo overwhelmed Malvinne Alcala, 11-4, 11-4, in the first singles match.
The MH Del Pilar shuttlers, on the other hand, stepped up their title bid in this event sponsored by JVC with a 3-0 rout of Woodrose with Jackielyn Cudia and Malou Gaspar posting straightset victories over Michelle Cruz (11-2, 11-5) and Daniela Gamboa (11-3 117) in the singles matches. Doubles partners Chona Medina and Jaevena Subilla completed the sweep with a 15-1, 15-3 win over Carla Cruz and Roxanne Olanday.
Arellano fought back from a loss in the first singles match as it took the doubles and the second singles to turn back Xavier, 21, and advance to the finals of this event backed by Planet Sports, Bingo Bonanza, L Timestudio, Rudy Project, Gillette, Bacchus Energy Drink, Alaska, Lactacyd, Sunbolt, Coffee House, Accel, PhilStar, Pinoy Exchange.Com, Solar Sports, Ayala Center, PowerSmash and Magic 89.9.
Doubles partner Andrei Babad and Ian Bautista beat Joffre Arollado and Michael Lim, 15-7, 15-1, and Amjo Bautista held off Jeric Sy, 15-8, 15-12, to make up for the loss of JP Babad to Jobett Co, 12-15, 15-5, 15-4, as Arellano faces the winner of the Ateneo-Roosevelt match being played at presstime.
